Theatre

Raising awareness in the local communities is a fundamental means of reaching local populations as conservation messages are passed on most effectively by peers of the local inhabitants.  Because of this the WCF is collaborating with professional African theatre groups:

  • “Ymako Teatri” in Côte d’Ivoire
  • “Eddie Theatre Productions” in Liberia
  • “TOUCHATOUT” in Guinea

These companies are amongst the best and most well known performance arts companies in West Africa.

The WCF has created two plays with Ymako Teatri: ‘Our cousins in the forest’ and ‘If that forest finishes’, one with Eddie Theatre Productions, called ‘Chimpanzees are our closest relatives’ and one with “TOUCHATOUT” called ‘‘BALLAL DEMOU’’ which means “ S.O.S. chimpanzee”.

Since several years we are also working with amateur school theatre groups in Côte d’Ivoire and Liberia. Our results indicate that the message we want to transmit to the public is well received and understood and the population very much appreciates when it is delivered by their children. The creation of school companies, thus directly implicating the local population, guarantees the sustainability of the education program in these regions. We are presenting here a filmed video sequence of the play “Our cousins of the forest” performed by the school children of Wonséaly, and some sequences of the awareness projects in the villages.
