Strolling pachyderms were captured in action as they crossed the border between Guinea and Sierra Leone, their journey captured by the cameras of the project to preserve Guinea's flagship areas and wildlife species. The Wild Chimpanzee Foundation is monitoring this elephant population since several years with camera traps and video analysis is ongoing to study these elephants into detail.
The aim is to promote the conservation of African forest elephants (Loxodonta cyclotis) in the future Pinselli-Soyah-Sabouyah National Park, Guinea. This critically endangered species is a national symbol of Guinea. The importance of this fundamental value justifies the commitment of the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development, the European Union and their partners in the field such as the Wild Chimpanzee Foundation, the Office Guinéen des Parcs Nationaux et Réserves de Faune, as well as the National Protected Area Authority of Sierra Leone, to work together to establish sustainable cross-border management of these majestic elephants.
We would like to express our gratitude to our partners and donors, namely the European Union (EU), Office Guinéen des Parcs Nationaux et Réserves de Faune (OGPRNF), Ministère de l’Environnement et du Développement Durable (MEDD), National Protected Area Authority (NPAA), and the local communities.
