Biomonitoring

Biomonitoring is conducted by the Wild Chimpanzee Foundation since 2004. Biomonitoring is the technical term for (repeatedly) surveying the distribution and frequency of a species – in our case with a specific focus on chimpanzees – in a given area. We try to answer the following questions:

Where do the last wild chimpanzee populations live?

Are these populations stable or declining?

How many wild chimpanzees are left?

What are the threats to their survival?

WCF biomonitoring in Guinea has been conducted in collaboration with Ministère de l’Environnement et du Développement Durable and Office Guinéen des Parcs Nationaux et Réserves de Faune in the following locations: proposed Pinselli-Soyah-Sabouyah National Park, proposed Badiar National Park, Moyen-Bafing National Park and other regions without protected area status, but with expected chimpanzee presence.
