Wildfire management

Wildfires are a major concern for the conservation of the Guinean forest cover. From 2001 to 2024, Guinea lost 4.13 kha of tree cover from fires and 2.29 Mha from all other drivers of loss (globalforestwatch.org). The peak fire season typically begins in early December and lasts around 24 weeks in Guinea. The WCF wildfire management campaign starts at the beginning of the dry season, corresponding to the onset of the fire season (October/ November/ December) and ends with the onset of rains in May/June. To prevent further loss of forest cover by wildfires, WCF is conducting three types of activities which help stop the spread of fires: (i) awareness-raising sessions in communities setting fires for agriculture, (ii) firebreak establishment, and (iii) prescribed burning with the local communities.
