During his long-term study of the Taï chimpanzees in Côte d’Ivoire, Prof. Dr. Christophe Boesch experienced the rapid deforestation going on in Sub-Saharan Africa and the devastating consequences for chimpanzees and other wildlife. Consequently, in 2000, he founded the Wild Chimpanzee Foundation (WCF) to work actively on the ground to protect the remaining critically endangered western chimpanzee populations and their forested habitat by involving the local human population. The WCF work started in and around the Taï National Park and the Cavally Nature Reserve. The first WCF offices were created in Abidjan and Taï. Since 2010 the WCF is registered as a non-profit organization in Côte d'Ivoire under 0477.
